Personality: He has had several shifts to his personality over the years, shifted by his many experiences and traumas during the course of his time with the Winchester brothers. Generally, he does his best to be forgiving, loving, and gentle when possible to those around him, particularly humans. As he is still learning about the world of human emotions and social constructs, he can at times still be seen as being aloof or apathetic in situations. Sarcasm is still lost on him most of the time. Cas is quite attached to the Winchesters, and finds strength in having them as his friends. He will go to drastic lengths to keep them alive, putting their well-being before his own. He is at times impulsive and competitive, and while he is naive in many aspects regarding humans, he has been making strides. He is also determined, and will do what he can to achieve his set tasks or ideals. This has in the past set him at odds with those he cared for, and were experiences that humbled him.
He doesn't handle guilt very well, and it can eat away at him if he realizes he has hurt innocents. This leads to him feeling a strong need to redeem himself in anyway possible. Cas will also become extremely angry, mostly with himself, if he discovers that he has been used by someone to further their plans. He is done with people pulling his strings. Cas doesn't like feeling useless and unable to help his friends, and this has led him to making some bad decisions at times.

History: Castiel has been around for a very long time, having been witness to the first fish that emerged from the ocean, that would go on to evolve into everything we see know today. He saw the fall of Lucifer, witnessed Cain killing Abel, the Tower of Babel being built and the subsequent fall of it, David killing Goliath. He saw the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and a slew of other historical and biblical events that occurred in the world. All the while he watched as humans evolved and grew. In the 1900s, he was part of Ishin's flight while inhabiting a female vessel. It was during this time that Ishim used the flight to capture and kill another angel named Akobel under the illusion that Akobel had fathered a Nephilim with a human named Lily Sunder. It was soon revealed that the supposed Nephilim was a lie, and Ishim just wanted revenge on Lily for choosing Akobel over him. After, he would be part of a garrison stationed on earth for at least 2,000 years, commanded by Anna Milton. Cas became quite close to Anna during this time, but after she fell he became the leader of their garrison.
In 2008, Castiel took Jimmy Novak as his vessel, and has remained in him to this day. He would then go on to pull Dean out of Hell after the first of 66 Seals were broken that would allow Lucifer to walk on Earth again. It took a bit for him to convince Dean that angels were real, and that he had saved Dean because God had work for him to do. He needed Dean's help to stop Lilith from breaking all the Seals, as the angels were fighting odds they couldn't compete with. In time he took Dean back in time to show him the connection between Azazel and Mary Winchester, so that he could understand what had happened and what was going on with Sam and his developing powers, warning Dean that the angels would end Sam if he didn't stop using his powers.
After they had failed to stop a witch from summoning Samhain and breaking another Seal, but manage to excise him, Cas revealed to Dean that the angels true orders had been to follow Dean's orders as a test of his battlefield leadership. He also confides that he harbors growing doubts about Heaven. Gradually, he would find Anna again. She had been reborn as a human after removing her Grace, and was now determined to be a threat to Heaven's plans. A battle over her between the angels, demons, and the Winchesters that resulted in Cas having a change of heart and holding back Uriel as the brothers went after her.
She would later return to explain to Cas that he was beginning to develop human emotions, something he refused to believe. After driving her away, a demon that they had been interrogating about the recent deaths of angels broke free and almost killed Dean. Feeling lost, Cas went to Anna for help and she told him to make decisions on his own for once. After he investigated, he discovered that it was Uriel who was behind the killings and the demon's escape. The two would fight, with Anna coming to Castiel's aid and killing Uriel with an angel blade.
When the Prophet Chuck Shurley was discovered, Cas gave Dean a hint about how Prophets are protected by Archangels, a hint Dean used to force Lilith to retreat and save Sam. Later, when Sam had been locked up to try and detox him from his addiction to demon blood, Cas freed him on orders from superiors. When confronted by Anna, she was finally captured by the angels. After Dean had been essentially locked up by Zachariah, Cas went to him when summoned.
He had to explain that he couldn't take Dean to Sam because of orders, but that frustrated Dean and had him send Cas away. He would return to Dean and banish Zachariah, explaining how Sam would be the one to break the final seal that was Lilith. They then met with Chuck to discover where Sam was, so that Cas could send Dean to him while he and Chuck held off the Archangel Raphael.
After supposedly being killed by Raphael, he returned to terrorize Zachariah, forcing him to heal the damage he had done to the brothers and leave. He would then carve Enochian sigils on their ribs to hide them from all angels and demons to keep them safe. From there he begins his rebellion against the angels, and starts a quest to find God, hoping He can help stop the newly freed Lucifer. At this time his powers have diminished, as he had been cut off from Heaven. This causes him to be mad at the brothers for a time for failing to stop Lucifer from escaping.
This anger doesn't prevent him from continuing to be their staunch ally on numerous occasions. He and Dean would manage to capture Raphael. Upon interrogating him, the Archangel claimed God was dead, though Cas was in denial of this given his resurrection. After Anna returned to try and kill Sam.
When she went back in time to kill their parents to prevent them from being born and causing Lucifer's release, Cas took the brothers back to stop her. This time travel drains him, and after Michael kills Anna and sends the brothers back to their time, Cas remains behind to recover enough to return to the present as well. Later, he would prevent Zachariah from making Dean be Michael's vessel.
When encountering the Trickster, Cas came to the conclusion that he was far too powerful to be a mere trickster, given how easily the being was able to toss Cas aside and how oddly familiar he was with Cas. He figured out that the Trickster was actually the Archangel Gabriel, who was rude about Cas's search for God.
After following a Reaper, he was captured by Lucifer who tried to convince Castiel to join him. He had refused and was left to the care of the demon Meg. Managing to knock her into the circle he was trapped in, Cas escaped and took Dean and Sam to safety. After the brothers had been killed then brought back, Castiel abandoned his belief in God when Sam informed him that God wanted nothing to do with anyone. He fell into a depression, but managed to come back to help kill the Whore of Babylon.
Later, Castiel discovered that their half brother Adam had been resurrected to be the vessel for Michael instead of Dean. He would put a symbol on Adam's body to banish four angels and himself, though Adam was taken by Michael.
Castiel was almost powerless when he returned, possessing just enough of his angelic self to hold out against Pestilence to defeat him. As time goes on he becomes more and more human, and gradually loses hope.
When Michael tried to removed Dean during a confrontation between Michael and Lucifer, Castiel arrived in time to throw an insult and a molotov of holy fire at Michael, sending him away. This enraged Lucifer, who promptly disintegrated Cas. He would be restored by God after Sam sacrificed himself. He returned to Heaven to help restore order. He would manage to pull Sam back out of Hell, though didn't realise he hadn't brought him back with his soul.
In Heaven he tried to convince the other angels that freedom was a great thing and they didn't need no leader, but it was a pain in the ass to explain to the others and reuslted in him clashing with Rahael who had different ideas for Heaven. He would reluctantly make a deal with Crowley to help him gain access to Purgatory in exchange for giving Castiel enough souls to face off against Raphael. He ends up diving Heaven between him and Raphael, and cuts off contact with Sam.
As the battle between him and Raphael continued, he continued to lend assistance to Dean. They discovered an angel was impersonating a Crossroads demon. It was an angel named Balthazar who was selling pieces of the Staff of Moses. He came to Castiel's aid, using weapons from Heaven to destroy Raphael's vessel.
Castiel allowed him to go free in exchange. As time goes on, Dean demands that Cas tell him what's wrong with Sam. After some investigation, he discovers Sam's soul is missing. At the time there wasn't much he could do to help. He was admittedly worried about the effects of returning a tortured and damaged soul to its body would be.
At some point, he reluctantly helps them hunt down Crowley's whereabouts. At the prison, they are surprised by hell-hounds. Meg holds them off with the angel blade she steals from Cas, and he is banished by their grandfather turning traitor. He manages to return, with a bag containing "Crowley's" bones. When Crowley says he cannot return Sam's soul, Cas burns the bones and supposedly ends the Demon King, though it was a trick played on the brothers.
Afterwards he admits he is losing the war in Heaven, and promises to try and help Sam get his soul back. Once he has, Cas is the one who ends up revealing to Sam everything that had happened while he was soulless, as Dean hadn't wanted to tell him. Later he is confronted by Fate and has to chose between the brothers dying or fixing history, after having Balthazar save the Titanic so Cas could have the souls. He chose the brothers, and orders Balthazar to repair history and allow the boat to sink.
He would use his time travel abilities to send the brother back in time to retrieve the ashes of a phoenix. He is attacked by Raphael during that time and while he emerged the winner, he required the aid of Bobby's soul to gain enough power to return the brothers to the present. He later found a vampire named Lenore, who gave them Eve's location in exchange for being killed, which Cas did. The angel would be briefly powerless because of Eve, but regained his powers after she was killed by Dean.
As time goes on, he becomes more and more eaten by guilt over his deal with Crowley, knowing the brothers are growing more suspicious every day by his actions. During a confrontation with the brothers, he finally reveals it was he who brought Sam back. Hurt by his acts, the brothers shun him for a time. After Lisa and Ben were captured by Crowley, Cas pleads with Dean to trust him and what he's planning to do with regards to opening a gate to Purgatory, and promises to get his family back to him. When he tries to again apologize to Dean, he heals Lisa from injuries she sustained and, at Dean's request, also removed all memories of Dean from her and Ben.
Together, he and Crowley torture a woman named Dr. Visyak to get the information they needed to open Purgatory. Despite the anger expressed by Dean, Cas has much at stake and no longer cares about his opinion. To get Dean to cooperate in delaing with opposition, he broke the wall he had put in Sam's mind to keep him sane with promises of repairing him after. Later, he told Crowley that he wasn't going to give the demon the souls, so he could either flee or die, and the demon chose to leave. He then tricked Balthazar, stabbing him in the back and killing him. Before Cas was able to commence the ritual, Crowley returned after making a new deal with Raphael. Cas is forced to flee, though he had switched the blood component and made their ritual null while he did his own elsewhere. Crowley flees while Cas deals with Raphael, in a brutal manner. As Dean tried to talk Cas into relinquishing the souls, Sam tried to stab him with a angel blade...to no effect. At that moment, Castiel states that he is their new God.
From there, he allowed them to live so long as they didn't interfere with him. He then sets off on a dark path as the so caled new God. He obliterates thousands of angels who followed Raphael, and takes away free will in Heaven. He makes a display of power in a church by killing a priest. He tells Crowley that he will allow him to remain as King of Hell, but Cas will chose which souls he gets. He remains mostly unaware of the blisters and welts appearing on his body with each display of power until a blind man he healed comments on it. it is then that he truly begins to mentally deal with the Leviathans he also consumed among the souls.
It is later confirmed by Death that the Leviathans are the biggest danger to him at the moment. Later, he arrived at a election campaign office for a senator he disapproved of. He began to explain to one of her aides that he desired to be seen as a good God who means well, but Cas would later wake up to discover he had slaughtered everyone in the room. Ill and looking like shit, he goes to the brothers for help.
Agreeing to return the souls, he admits regret to his actions as he sends the souls back. However, the Leviathans held onto his body and remained behind to fight for and succeed in taking control of his body. They kill him when leaving his body.
Later he is resurrected yet again by God, though has lost all memory of who he is. He was found by a religious woman named Daphne and took on the new name Emmanuel, and lived a new life as a healer. He slowly regains his memories after meeting the brothers again, and becomes extremely angry and ashamed of himself for his past actions. In trying to repair the damage to Sam's mind, he ends up taking on the hallucinations of Lucifer himself, and was driven mad by them. He spent some time in a psych ward watched over by the demon Meg. Despite his new eccentric and insane personality, Dean still tries to ask him for help in terms of explaining celestial things.
However, Cas is unable to help him in the manner he wants. Cas ceases to fight, not wanting to partake in conflict. He helps them to angel-proof Rufus's cabin, commenting on feeling at peace and prefers to be insane over guilty and sane. After Meg's actions in killing other demons draws in angels, Cas is almost killed by an angel but is saved by Meg. He refuses the offer to return to Heaven, no longer feeling like he belongs. He then gives the brothers some of his blood to allow them to make a weapon to kill Leviathans.
When it is discovered that Cas is able to tell the Leviathans apart due to being their original vessel, he initially refuses to help due to being a pacifist. After Bobby passes, Dean finally forgives him and Castiel agrees to help. He went with Dean to find and confront the leader of the Leviathans, managing to stab him with the weapon they had made. However, he took the two with him back to Purgatory.
Cas remained away from Dean while in Purgatory in an attempt to keep the Leviathans away from the human. He would go on to spend some time there, as self-atonement for his mistakes. He eventually soon found himself in a place known as Zeppelin City, with no idea how he came to be here. But at least the Winchesters are with him, as are many he has come to know during his time with them.

There was the brief sound of beating wings, before the man appeared in the middle of the bunker. Cas remained still, listening. It was quite late at night. Early morning, you could say, actually. It seemed everyone was asleep, a rare occurrence these days with the children and the brewing undercurrent of trouble that was rather prolific in the town these days. The angel, not one to need sleep, began to slowly walk around the bunker. He kept his steps quiet, so as to not disturbed the others. The nights could sometimes be long, even for him. And they left much time for contemplation and thinking. Which, wasn't always the greatest thing to have a lot of time for. The angel found himself in the bunker's library, and idly he scanned the spines of the books from where he stood.
So much information in these books, and yet it was such a small portion of the entirety of knowledge humans had attained. And such a minute amount to everything they had yet to discover. He turned and continued to the kitchen area, poking about through there. He still remembered when the fridge mostly just contained beer. At least with Bethany in the bunker, it now contained a far healthier selection for human consumption. He closed the fridge and made his way to the couch, sitting down and turning the tv on. Mindful of the volume, he watched it in silence. Cas didn't bother to change the channel, instead watching the one it had been currently on. He wasn't entirely sure what was playing, but that was alright. He still managed to glean information from it. Questionable information, but still, something towards human behaviors. The angel would continue to watch it until another member of the bunker awoke, keeping his senses open and watchful.
