Personality: Being raised in the hunting circle, it's odd that Sam has turned out to be as kind hearted and gentle natured as he is. It's no secret that Sam is the opposite personality of his brother Dean. He is driven on helping out whoever he can, sometimes even meaning those in the supernatural side of things. While Sam has good intentions, he can be a little over trusting of those who only plan to use it to their benefit. His kind nature has gotten him in a bind a time or two. His empathy has remained unscathed, however, and he continues to try and look at things from a more positive light to keep that part of himself intact.
Sam has an understanding of how his job works but he has a tendency to go his own way with things when he feels like it's needed. Ask questions first, then shoot. The observant side of Sam has caused him to try to look at every logical stand point, even when that's not what always has to be done. His urge to know all of the facts and details causes him to be a little slower paced than those around him. Sam's intelligence is one of the best things about him and he takes pride in it, but it better to lean street smarts when it's needed and that's something he knows he should work on. He's one of the greatest hunters, having sacrificed everything to continue on with the dangerous lifestyle, but he still has his down falls with it. He's found himself in a couple of situations where acting fast had to come before looking at all of the facts and adapting to his brother's command has come in handy in those situations. Though Sam can work well with his brother, it's no secret that they clash on some ideals.
Growing up, Sam had to learn how to easily adapt and it just continued to get easier as he bounced from place to place throughout his childhood. His ability to adapt to things around him has never been something he's happy with, but it's helpful with his line of work. He has always been one to stop and smell the roses or take in the moment of somewhere he's happy. The longing of wanting to live a normal life is one thing that has always been, and probably will continue to be, something that holds a weight on his shoulders. But his loyalties lie with his family and he tries to push the dreaming to the side for the sake of it. With never being set in one place, Sam has learned to become a resourceful individual and that is one of his key points that has helped him on more than one occasion and continues to even to this day.

History: On May 2nd, 1983, the second son of John and Mary Winchester was born. Samuel Winchester's first six months of life were simply the most normal part of his life and it eats away at him to this day that he didn't get to grow up experiencing that same white picket fence, apple pie life. The night that Sam turned six months old would be the end up his peaceful upbringing and it would alter the rest of his life completely. That night, a fire started in Sam's nursery that claimed Mary's life before he would even get the chance to have a memory of his own with her. That's one of the biggest things he envies Dean for the most. He got to have some part of their mother.
Growing up the way that he did isn't something that Sam really considered easy and it was far from what the usual child had to go through. Unknown to Sam for the first few years, their never-ending road trip with their father wasn't just about seeing the country. John Winchester was on a mission to find out what had killed his wife... because he knew that fire back in 1983 was no case of faulty wiring. Due to John's obsession to finding what killed Mary, Sam had to learn how things that no kid usually learns. Hunting monsters that creep in the dark, guns and melting silver into bullets, adapting to each new place they end up in. He watched other kids his age get play and to go to school on a regular bases, while he was learning how about the different supernatural beings. Sam also had this deep desire to go to school and learn like a normal kid. For a short period of time when he was younger, he actually did go to a school that he really like. He was told that he was intelligent and had promise, but sadly he didn't get to stick there due to being uprooted once again. Being so young and having that happen over and over, it just felt like a never ending cycle. He, at the age of 14, even ran away while under Dean's watch because he wasn't able to take the pressure. He was fending for himself, but he found peace for the short period of time. He took in a golden retriever and had a dog like a normal kid. Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Sam knew he couldn't keep off by himself like that forever and returned back to John and Dean.
As Sam got older, his relationship with his father had only faltered in comparison to what is was before which wasn't saying much. He had his heart set on going to school and this time it was his choice. At the age of 19, Sam told John that he was going to college. This was something he had to do for himself, he didn't have it in him to just please people anymore. So, off to college Sam went. He started attending Stanford University and had begun to fulfil a life-long dream. While at Stanford, he started studying law in hopes to pursue a career in that field. While in school, he had actually met another student named Jessica. To say that Sam fell head over heals for her was an understatement. Their relationship had gotten pretty serious, enough so much that they ended up actually moving in together. They lived in an apartment peacefully up until he thought someone had broken into their home one night, only to discover that it was Dean. Dean started telling Sam about how their dad had went on a hunting trip and he hadn't heard from him. After quite a bit of convincing and arguing from Dean's side, Sam decided he would briefly help Dean try to find John. Along the way, they came across a few ghosts, wendigos, and other spooks. When Sam finally returned home to Jessica, he relaxed on his own bed before he felt something drip on his head. His eyes opened and he saw Jessica on the ceiling, dying the same exact way that his mother had those twenty some odd years ago. Devastated, Sam goes through the same emotions his father did many years ago. He hits the road with Dean with the primary goal to kill the demon that murdered his girlfriend and his mother. While on the road, Sam continuously argues with Dean. His reasoning for this is Dean’s lack of curiosity towards their father’s blind orders. While Sam vocally questions and resents their father’s orders, Dean had bowed his head and did as he was told. In Sam’s words being a “loyal little soldier.” Eventually, the brother’s went their separate ways and only reunite when Dean apologizes. It had also been around this time that Sam started getting accurate precognitions and learned telekinesis.
At some point, the Winchester brothers discover that their father had been captured by demons. This had been through the interrogation of a possessed Meg Masters who was an old acquaintance of Sam. Though they rescue him, John is possessed by Azazel the demon who killed their beloved woman. The situation is both emotionally and physically painful in the end forcing Sam to shoot John in the leg with The Colt—not having the heart to kill his father to kill the demon. The demon escapes and Sam goes to take his father and heavily wounded brother to the hospital. His efforts fail when the impala is struck by a truck that had been possessed by a demon.
The Winchesters are air-lifted to Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s hospital. Sam, who is frustrated and panicked over Dean’s life-threatening injuries. It isn’t much later that John and Bobby plan to summon a demon. Of course, Sam is dismayed by their decision and argues with the idea. In the end, John sells his soul and The Colt to Azazel for Dean’s life. Unknowing of John’s sacrifice, Sam continues to argue with him but calms after John insist that they shouldn’t fight. It is only minutes later that John dies and Sam’s guilt is at an ultimate high, feeling that his father died believing his own son hated him. A week later the boys return to hunting and hastily make their way into cases while digging for further information on Azazel’s plan with psychic children similar to Sam. During this time Dean reveals that Azazel plans on turning Sam evil and in response Sam becomes determined to change his destiny.
Not too long later, Sam finds himself with the very children they were researching. There Azazel explains the whole situation to Sam and why certain situations happened the way they did. He quickly learns that the demon’s plans had been to recruit for the Anti-Christ for a demon army. To do this the psychics had to kill one another until there was only one standing. Despite Sam’s efforts to save the others he and Jake Talley are the only ones left. In the end Sam dies in Dean’s arms. Depressed from the loss of his father and brother Dean sells his soul for Sam’s resurrection. With the help of Bobby Singer and Ellen Harvelle they track down Jack Talley who had been opening the Gates of Hell. Sam kills him in cold blood while the others do what they need to try and close the gates and fight Azazel. In the end Azezal is killed by Dean, John’s spirit gives comforting and emotional words to his sons, and Dean explains he sold his soul. From there Sam feels determined to get his soul back.
However, the stress from trying to restore Dean’s missing soul and the trauma from past events causes Sam to be more headstrong and cruel in killing the supernatural. His reasoning is to become strong like his brother--so if all comes to fail and he’s alone in the world he can fight on his own. It isn’t long after that Sam meets a demon named Ruby. She tries desperately and patiently to gain his trust. She’s helped fix The Colt, saved them in tricky cases, and even said she could help bring Dean’s soul back from Hell. Though the last statement isn’t true, Ruby also informed Sam that a new demon, Lilith, had risen and plans to kill him. She is also the demon with Dean’s contract. This new information drives Sam to become more determined to find a loophole to Dean’s contract. Eventually, they reach Lilith and hope that with the help of Ruby’s knife could get her to end the contract. Their efforts immediately fail when Sam is restrained and Dean is torn to shreds by Hell Hounds. Immediately after Dean’s death, Lilith tries to kill Sam but is unable too. She hastily makes her way out of the scene and leaves Sam to mourn over Dean’s death.
Months pass and Sam had made a routine of heavily drinking and trying to bargain with crossroad demons. To Sam’s dismay none of the demons wanted to deal with him, leaving him to feel that a positive result might only come from killing Lilith—exacting his revenge for killing his brother. He immediately calls for Ruby who helps perfect Sam’s psychic abilities. Eventually, the two become lovers and he seems to be coping with Dean’s loss better than before, certain that with his training he’ll be able to avenge him. When Dean returns he explains that Lilith is trying to break the 66 seals to free Lucifer—and that an angel named Castiel had plucked him out of Hell to help stop Lilith. Of course, Sam goes along with Dean and hesitantly uses his powers to help the situation. For a long while, it seemed that his powers would be too weak or too strong and to keep his powers at an all-time high Sam would drink demon blood, something he quickly got addicted too.
While under the influence of demon blood, Sam would grow to be cold and arrogant and eventually was forced to detox. However, Castiel let Sam go just before the detox was finished. Sam met up with Ruby who was informing Sam that he needed more demon blood to stop Lilith. Dean had made efforts to try and kill Ruby but Sam stopped him. They argued until Sam left and Dean told him, much like their father did many years ago, to never come back. Sam, though feeling guilty for leaving Dean, kept drinking demon blood and was ready to finish what he had started many months ago. In the end, Sam did find Lilith and he did kill her but realized that what he had done was what was destined of him as a “special child.” Regret quickly consumed him as he realized that he was tricked and manipulated into starting Armageddon.
As the portal to Armageddon opens, the Winchester brothers are transported away from the scene. In fact, after the whole ordeal, Sam feels as if whatever pulled them away from the portal cleaned out his demonic mojo. However, Dean can no longer trust Sam and overtime Sam agrees to Dean’s words. The brothers eventually go their own ways and Sam tries his second attempt in being normal but that fails when he has dreams of Jessica telling him that his is a true vessel for Lucifer in conjunction with Dean being the true vessel for Michael. Again, Sam goes back to Dean who, at first, rejects him. He later comes back to accept Sam’s request and desire for redemption. The boys go on the hunt for God but find that God doesn’t have an interest in the Apocalypse. They try to search for another loophole and find one in The Four Horseman’s Rings. It is during this time that Sam wishes to handle the situation himself, encouraging Dean to return to his past relationship. This is also a time where it is revealed that Sam and Dean have a younger half-brother named Adam Milligan. Anywho, He says his goodbyes to Bobby and Castiel before confronting Lucifer who already knew of their plans. Seeing no other option, Sam gives his body to Lucifer and fights for control from within. Despite his efforts Sam is unable to break free until Lucifer is in the middle of a fight with Dean. Catching a glimpse of a toy soldier that ignites his memory, Sam takes over his body and reopens the portal. When Michael returns with his vessel being Adam, Sam stops the angel from causing any more damage and pulls the angel into the portal with him. Dean, who decides to fulfill Sam’s request, goes back to his past relationship unknowing that Sam has returned.
It isn’t until a year later, when Sam saved Dean from a Djinn poisoning, that the Winchester brothers reunite. Sam explains that he’s never actually left and has been searching for the force that pulled gim from Hell. During this time Sam had meet up with relatives from his mother side, The Campbells, and joined them in a hunting group. Castiel soon reveals that Sam doesn’t have a soul and that the soul is trapped in the cage with Lucifer and Michael. It is later revealed that Crowley had pulled Sam and their grandfather Samuel from Hell to help find Purgatory. Unlike Samuel, Sam had no idea that he was helping Crowley. In means to get Sam’s soul back gets Death’s assistance. He is told not to poke or prod at the wall he had made him because it will break and destroy Sam. Though Dean is careful not to break the wall—it is shattered and Sam tries to recollect his broken soul. Once complete, he reawakens, though still struggling with the visions of the Cage that his soul endured.
After Castiel's actions result in the release of the Leviathans, God's first creations, Sam is left struggling with the restoration of his memories of his time in Hell, even if he remains dedicated to helping Dean and others stop the Leviathans. Sam continues to get hallucinations of Lucifer taunting him with the thought of being in Hell. Trying to not let these visions get the best of him, Sam focuses on pain to release the hallucinations but Sam is soon tortured to rely on these visions when they come in play to save Dean. His visions become worse and eventually he is sent to an asylum after getting hit by a car. His reason for not paying attention was because he had been running away from Lucifer. Dean goes on the search for a healer to repair Sam but it is Castiel who takes Sam’s damaged mentality. The Leviathan situation worsens when Sam rescues The Prophet Kevin and finds Dean and Castiel right as they kill Dick. For a split second, all seems to be fixed but quickly after Dean and Castiel disappear and Crowley takes Kevin, leaving Sam completely alone and confused.
Several weeks pass after the disappearance of Dean Winchester and The Angel Castiel. Unsure of where to start, what to do, or who to reach out too, his guilt drives him to give up on hunting. Sam, who had quickly come to the conclusion that they have both died, spends many months in question of if his own assumptions. In the meanwhile, he makes a third attempt to live normally—even finding himself in another relationship with a woman named Amelia Richardson. However, though the relationship was intimate, Amelia’s supposed late husband, Don, is actually still alive. Sam wants to stay with Amelia, but eventually decides to leave and gives her the opportunity to reconnect with Don. Once again, Sam finds himself alone and makes his way to inhibiting in Rufus’ old cabin in Whitefish, Montana. He is overcome by a feeling of hopelessness when he reflects on his past decisions. Sam now currently works as a plumber for Rootin’ Tootin’ and often makes enhancements to Rufus’ cabin in means to fill the void that had been created after the loss of his only family, Dean.
