Abilities
Merrick is not a hunter, but she does have knowledge of the supernatural and is not a stranger to it. She is not very strong physically, but she is quite agile and will fight if she absolutely has to.
She also has a strong knowledge and understanding of magical items and things used for spells (see history) although she does not actively practice witchcraft.
Clairsentience - Merrick has the ability to acquire psychic knowledge about someone by touching them with her hands. While she does have better control over this ability than she used to, it can still be unpredictable and she can't always 'shut out' the things she sees when she touches a person. This is why she usually wears gloves of some kind. If she is touched unexpectedly on her bare hand, it can result in a painful sensation in her head while random images and bits of information rush through. She has to be prepared and concentrate on what she is doing in order for the knowledge to make any sense.
Mediumship - Merrick can act as an intermediary between the world of the living and the spirit world. She can hold seances and hear the targeted spirit speak to her then relay messages, or the spirit can take over her body and physically speak through her. Performing a seance takes a lot out of her as she is still strengthening this ability, most likely resulting in a days worth of sleep and/or a headache. She is also hesitant due to the first seance she ever did. However, she is still willing to do this if it will help someone out.
Hypnosis - Since she was 10 years old, Merrick has studied and learned a lot about hypnotism. She is able to place someone into a hypnotic trance and can even make them do those silly things like cluck like a chicken or do something odd when someone says a specific word. While she does have some fun with this, she typically uses hypnosis to help people overcome things that can be holding them back in life.
Mental Barriers - She has very strong mental defenses. They are not impenetrable by any means, but they are more difficult to get through than normal humans. She can attempt to block out standard psychics, but more powerful ones would probably be able to overpower her defenses.

Personality: Merrick is generally a pretty easygoing and carefree individual. It can end up being misinterpreted as not caring at all, however Merrick just keeps a pretty level attitude most of the time regardless of the situation. It's difficult to surprise her or freak her out, it would seriously have to be something way out there or incredibly gory for her to be phased at all. These attributes are mainly due to her upbringing in a very open home where a variety of things were discussed, along with learning about the supernatural since she could walk and talk. She's also upbeat and energetic, catching her in a bad mood or depressed being a rare thing. Merrick can be a bit...odd sometimes and tends to ramble about different things that she may be thinking about at the time, and catching her staring off into space with a glazed over expression is a normal occurrence to those that know her.
Merrick can be rather nosy when it comes to other people, wanting to know a lot about people and even things about them that they may not want to share. It's possible that her gifts could have some kind of effect on this need of knowing things. It may take once or twice, but she will eventually get the hint if someone doesn't want to talk about something and she'll stop asking about it. When Merrick speaks, it is in a soft, calm and even comforting tone which doesn't really change unless its a rare moment that she is upset. When performing a hypnosis session her voice changes even more so the person she is hypnotizing can 'fall under'.

History: Merrick was born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, the youngest child to Jeremy and Sylvia Blackthorne. Her childhood was pretty standard...okay so maybe not quite normal. Her father is a witch and her mother a psychic, possessing the ability to read minds and hold seances, and each coming from a long line of witches and psychics. Ever since Merrick could walk and talk, she was taught about the things that really existed in the world and both prepared her for the possibility that she could end up with abilities of her own someday. Merrick also attended public school for most of her childhood, she was a good student but was quiet and reserved with only a few friends. A lot of people knew about her family and as usually happens, they tended to fear what they didn't understand.
Much of her time (when not preoccupied with school and homework) was spent in her family shop called Blackthorne's, a psychic shop where magical items and things for spells could be purchased. It's intent is to help those practicing white magic and spells to help others, along with things for psychics to use with their abilities. At the shop, Merrick was taught about different ingredients for spells and magical items by her paternal grandparents. She would also watch her mother do readings on people and was fascinated by how good people seemed to feel when they left the shop. When she was 10, Merrick became interested in hypnotism and began to study it like it was another subject in school. Her mom was too powerful to hypnotize, but she would practice on her brother and sister for mostly hilarious results, then used it for more serious purposes as she got better at it.
Merrick's powers began to manifest when she was about 12 years old, triggered by the traumatic event of her grandparents dying in a horrific car accident. A police officer delivering the news tried to comfortingly pat Merrick's bare hand and a flood of images suddenly filled her head of the officers life and random things about him. Luckily she had her parents and older siblings to help her understand her new ability, but she suffered from awful headaches for the first year and a half afterward. After the 7th grade, Merrick was pulled out of public school to be homeschooled by her mother. As she got older, Merrick began working part time at the shop and has been known to help out good witches, psychics and even hunters needing help with cases. They couldn't help but be impressed by her extensive knowledge and how smart (although a bit spacey) she is especially since she was still a kid.
Shortly after her 16th birthday, Merrick did her first seance with help from her mother. A young woman came into the shop and wished to speak with her dead husband, who had tragically fallen from the window of their bedroom. She wanted to speak with him one last time and find closure and see if he was at peace. As they started the seance, the husband began speaking with Merrick...it was hard to make out what he was saying, but the word 'murder' was clear as day. He then 'entered' Merrick's body to speak through her and revealed the truth about his death: A man that his wife had a past affair with couldn't let go and broke into their house while the wife was out. A struggle ensued and the man shoved the husband hard, causing him to fall out the window. The woman couldn't believe this and broke down in tears, but the spirit inside of Merrick tried to take control of the young girls body so he could attack his wife. Thankfully he wasn't full blown vengeful yet and with the help of her mom and older sister, the trance was broken.
It was clear that this could end up being a problem if left unchecked, so Merrick's dad called around for someone to help. By means of contacting a friend of a friend, a hunter by the name of Lyle York was sent their way, and Merrick along with her parents explained the situation. Since the husband had been cremated, they had to find out what he was bound to so they could destroy it. Merrick insisted on going to the woman's house with Lyle to help out, but he didn't want to bring someone so young along and her parents agreed. They weren't hunters and were not cut out for that sort of thing, believing they had helped as much as they could. However, being the impulsive adventurous type that she was, Merrick snuck out of the shop to follow Lyle.
It ended up being a good thing that she did, because he was having a rough go of trying to find the possible special item while the spirit attacked Lyle and the wife. On impulse, Merrick removed her gloves and grabbed the wife by the arm, concentrating hard on the information that poured into her head for anything that could help. The husband had given his wife a special necklace on their last anniversary together, and even though she didn't know for sure if that was it, it was worth a shot. Merrick raced upstairs to find it in the bedroom and Lyle managed to destroy it before anymore damage was done.
Her family was proud and relieved that she was okay, but nonetheless grounded her to shop cleaning duty and kept a very close eye on her. That was also her one big leap into the hunting world, and she's stuck to more of a supportive roll after that and also not doing a lot of seances. Her focus now is to further strengthen her abilities and finish school, then one day she will take over Blackthorne's and run it.

RP Sample: Zach was not a man that enjoyed being idle for an extended period of time…more often than not, he preferred to be working or at least on the road heading to the next monster problem. He had finished a job hunting a rugaru a few states over about three days ago now, but it felt like much longer to the veteran hunter. As he sat outside the small café and scanned through the days newspaper, his left leg bounced up and down restlessly while he looked for anything that would catch his eye.
The only thing that interrupted his concentration was the young petite waitress appearing at his right side and asking in a soft voice, “Did you need a refill on your diet soda, hun?” It took a couple extra beats for Zach to realize he was being spoken to, and he blinks a few times before gazing up at her with a brief smile. He responds in his light Scottish accent: “Aye…that would be nice, thank ya.” She returns the smile and looks away, then hurries off get his refill, leaving Zach to look back at his paper while letting out a heavy sigh.
He wasn’t usually this restless between jobs but he needed to take his mind off of things more than anything. An argument he recently had with Alessandra was one of those ‘things’…it had been over a couple vampires that she let go because they didn’t pose a threat, in her opinion. She insisted that they only fed on animal blood and she would keep an eye on the situation. Zach couldn’t help but shake his head as he thought about it. Sure, he may be a bit biased when it came to the bloodsuckers due to his past with them, but he still couldn’t let shit like that just slide.
Of course he could always track them down and conduct his own investigation, but Alessa would find out somehow and it would just make things worse because then she would think he didn’t trust her judgment and…Zach groans lightly and rubs the stubble on his chin, knowing this train of thought will lead to nothing but a headache and returns to his paper.
