Abilities
✧Apportation : Rather than teleport himself or others, Joseph has the ability to 'apport' or send other objects away. He most often uses this to communicate with other witches secretly, apporting notes into their pockets, hands, or onto nearby surfaces. He merely requires a connection to the individual he is sending the object to, and tactile contact with said object.✧Empathy : Joseph is a gifted empath, able to both read and absorb the energies of those around. He has noted that he can lessen the pain of grief, sorrow, or physical agony, at the cost of experiencing them two-fold himself.
✧Longevity : While not immortal like some of his fellows, Joseph is noted to have been alive for the last century, and retains the youth of a young man, despite his appearance.
✧Potion Brewing | Alchemy : The basis of his career and life's work. Joseph learned basic chemistry at a young age, which influenced his progression into witchcraft, eventually becoming his main focus. He is an expert alchemist, able to brew a wide variety of potions and create balms for quote, 'anything'. His only limitation, by admission, happens to be the inability to properly brew concoctions capable of resurrecting the long-since deceased. Though he is able to bring those back to life who are on the edge of death, waiting to be taken.
✧Pyrokinesis : A rather common and simple ability, which Joseph often makes use of in his classroom. Students sometimes question how he can spontaneously generate heat on their hot plates, or start the gas aflame without a lighter.
✧Scrying | Hydromancy : Joseph practices a form of scrying known as 'hydromancy'. This particular spell is performed through a large bowl filled with water and ingredients connected to his target. When correctly worked, the bowl will show rippling images of his target, or even allow him to communicate with another.
✧Spell-casting : A witch's most useful skill. Joseph is a skilled but lacking caster, requiring time, preparation, items connected to a spell, and verbal incantations to properly practice. However, he is still quite strong despite this.
✧Telekinesis : Joseph is capable of non-verbal telekinesis, and pairs this with his other useful classroom spells. He is skilled enough to levitate a number of items with minimal effort, and send targets flying with enough focus.

Likes (At Least 3):
❤Magick : Like all witches, Joseph is a practitioner of magick, and enjoys utilizing it to achieve his goals. He's an ambitious caster and creator, often using his spells to assist himself and others in seemingly trivial ways.
❤Creativity : Joseph is a talented individual, capable of uniquely inventive ideas and techniques, many of which he applies to his work and craft.
❤Enthusiasm : He's a staunch believer in the idea of happiness and joy. "If one is able to keep up a smile and truly enjoy their work, they'll never lack for appreciation."
❤Teaching : Joseph went to college to achieve his PhD as a scientist, but sought his profession as a teacher of chemistry and alchemical mathematics. He's looking to learn and explain new philosophies, formulas, and inventions that he uncovers.
❤Men : For those who notice, Mr. Matthews tends to spend an inordinate amount of time among women, while also keeping an eye on men. He has admitted to having a distinct taste for the same sex, and enjoys their company in a more romantic capacity.
❤Suits : Joseph is rarely found wearing anything less than a button up shirt and fashionable dark jeans or slacks.
❤Fashion : Matthews is drawn to fashion trends, and happens to be a staunch believer in cyclical design. When he's not teaching or concocting a new serum, he can be found shopping for the latest items to wear.
❤Older Movies : "The 60's were the Golden Age."
❤Zeppelin : While he feels a tad constrained by the town's lack of outside contact and intricacy, he rather enjoys the people he's met in Zeppelin, and has fond memories of his life there.
❤Dancing : "Midnight blues and a slow dance, or the Salsa under the spotlight."
❤Alchemy : Joseph's primary talent and strength in life. He is an expert in alchemical processes, and believes himself to be among the best. While not nearly as powerful or experienced as the legendary Nicholas Flamel from fiction, he is capable of creating potions that extend life, regenerate wounds, cause mass explosions, and transmute materials. However, he is unable to resurrect the dead or create life the same way.
Dislikes (At Least 3):
✗Demons : In Joseph's mind, demons are dangerous and cruel, and lack any sort of decency. As such, they are apathetic and vicious, making them lower than even beasts. Or so he thinks.
✗Borrower Witches : Witches that borrow from demons are a 'no-go' in Joseph's book, given that they're pulling power from unholy monsters. Those that borrow from gods or immortal entities are alright, but seem to forget that they have bargained something in exchange for that gift.
✗Plain People : Those people who can't handle the wacky or unexplained, let alone the strangely supernatural world they live in. People who 'go to desk jobs, get coffee, and sleep at work', as he puts it.
✗Bratty Children : "Why are kids so goddang unappreciative of their stuff?"
✗Most Modern Music : "What is that claptrap? Is someone just talking while random patterns go off? Sounds like the news anchor from nineteen-ninety!"
✗The Idea Of Immortality : As Matthews puts it, "Those who wish to live forever lack the soul to love. Those who are cursed to live forever are sad and lonely souls, unable to experience the pleasures of life as easily. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy..."
✗Inane Literature : Books that happen to contain cliche' moral stories, fake romance, pornographical content, or even lack continuity are 'inane'.
✗'God' : While he understands that there is a real possibility that 'God' still exists, he hates the idea of him. An entity so powerful that he made the universe and all its realities, and allows mankind to suffer endlessly without reprieve. At least the Pagans answer their prayers...

Info So Far: Joseph Hyronimus Matthews was born on February twenty-ninth, nineteen o' nine, in the city of New Orleans. He was raised as the son of two wealthy individuals, both of whom were consummate scholars and socialites, always looking to obtain new knowledge and expand their circle of interests. His childhood retained a level of intrigue and change as a result, allowing him to grow into a man who never stopped his search for answers. Even when someone told him that he should just stop and relax, settle down somewhere calm, he couldn't. Life had too many aspects, too many secrets for him to uncover. Gods know how long it took before he was finally forced to stop.
In the year 1917, Joseph started his first year of college. He'd surpassed his classmates and peers, and thus got to attend the university early. His studies were taken at Harvard, though he soon found that while he had the intellect and capability to succeed there, his identity would always be marked as a 'superior'. That wasn't something he wished for. Rather, he wanted to live life as the every-man, someone who others could speak with comfortably without feeling inferior or superior. Simply...himself. So he quit his studies for a time, and traveled. During his time abroad, he discovered his true passion...science. Joseph spent the better part of three years apprenticed to a chemist, who swore that he could find the secret to a truly lengthened life through science. Together, he and the scientist found the solution...one that never got to leave the lab. They successfully uncovered an active element within the human body, which when increased, allowed the body to age at a slower pace. However, it was limited by the human body, and could only be increased by a cocktail of plant-based ingredients and human plasma.
Refusing to subject himself or others to that, Joseph destroyed their notes and calculations, thus putting an end to the experiments and erasing them from history. He split from his mentor, and returned to college in the year 1922, only to graduate from Harvard in the year 1925 with his degree in Chemical Sciences. Following those years, he spent his time working in a few college labs and on the move. Given that the experiment had changed his body, he aged at a much slower pace, gifting him time to learn and adapt while retaining his youth. In the year 1927, he finally found the secrets he'd been searching so long for. A former colleague revealed that they'd gotten word from an anonymous source of an elderly man, who possessed a number of ancient alchemical texts. While most scientists would have turned this down, or thought of the writings as invalid, heretical notes, Joseph believed they could be useful. After all, his mentor had taught him parts of alchemy during their time together- the blending of chemistry and ancient mystics. So off he went to locate this man, who he later learned was an elderly warlock by the name of Aleksandr Voschek.
After meeting in the city of Prague, the pair exchanged their notes- Joseph of his findings of helpful chemical change within the human body, and Aleksandr of alchemical rituals and sciences. They discussed the similarities and differences, Aleksandr broaching the subject with the history and powers that he had personally proved possible. Later that same night, the Russian vanished forever, disappearing from the city and the known world. Pleased and slightly disturbed, Joseph returned home and set about his studies. The texts he'd been given enlightened him to a whole new world, which he soon delved into with delight.
Over the following decades, the young man slowly aged and grew in knowledge. He met men and women of great political power, provided support to his communities, and eventually...began his studies of witchcraft. During the late 1970s, he took up with a local coven in the Treme', allegedly begun by the late Marie Laveau. They taught him much of their magick, allowing him to get an even greater grasp of the powers he had dabbled in so many years prior. For nearly ten years he worked with them, obtaining an understanding of witchcraft and how it tied in with his alchemical prowess. Then in the year 1980, he finally returned to college to obtain his teaching degree, wanting to pass his knowledge to the next generation. While many couldn't believe his age or lack thereof, he passed his courses and went on to teach in 1982. What happened between then and 2004 is unknown, but he arrived in the town of Zeppelin that year through what he refers to as 'dubious, slightly bitchy circumstances'.
