Royal was born to Japanese immigrants who rapidly Americanized upon arrival to the states, looking for a new life with their young daughter. This new life would not be a long one, however, as not long after their arrival an accident would take their second chance away from them, and throwing their daughter into the lurch that was the foster system.

Growing up in the system wasn't easy for Royal in any sense of the word. She never ended up settling with a family for quite a while, bouncing from home to home, running away once, never finding a place or family she felt comfortable in calling her own, but when she became a teenager she found a sudden inspiration. She's not sure where it came from exactly, but it struck her like a lightning bolt. Suddenly, she found a drive for her passions and a chance to better herself. She found passions, and friends, and a family to call her own. She found genuine connections and a love for science and engineering, and teaching. While she ended up getting degrees in chemistry and mechanical engineering, she would eventually end up going in for being a teacher for young children instead in a kindergarten.

Altogether, her life began to look up dramatically. She began to dabble in her habits and volunteer in her community, which led her to meet her girlfriend, Mia - a fellow teacher at the school she worked at, and within a few years of dating they were not only living together but starting a family. All in all, Royal had just about everything that she could have asked for. A steady job she was proud of, a home, a family. Things were looking up.

And then one late night staying back to prepare a lesson for the next day, and then it was all ruined by a cloud of wayward black smoke.

The demon that ruined Royal's life didn't even have the curtesy to go and use its own name when it did, when it began abusing Royal's girlfriend and adoptive daughter to drive them away, when it began to kill people, that was when Royal disconnected entirely... for five long years. It wasn't until a pair of hunters locked in on her dark passengers activities. Through their efforts, after five long years of being possessed and her entire life being ruined - Royal was brought back into control of her faculties and she... well, she wasn't the same. It would be generous to even call her a person in the time that followed. She ended up almost having to learn to function entirely. The two hunters ended up taking her in, realizing she had no where else to go, and trained her to defend herself.

And it was all she had going forward. Focusing on hunting, it became such a focus for her that she was entirely obsessed with hunting - and it was then that her degrees came into gear. As Royal learned to fight and hunt - her experience with chemicals and engineering ended up becoming a focus. She began making traps for monsters that most Hunters probably would never have expected to see - everything from triggered shotguns of silver buckshot to acid mixtures potent enough to briefly blind vampires. She was at her most dangerous when she was able to have some time to set up, and then find a place to rest with a sniper rifle. Faster than anyone would have expected, this broken woman with nothing to call her own rapidly became a terrifying and efficient hunter that garnered herself an impressive reputation.
